  • Three Tips to Good Nutrition During Cancer Treatment

Three Tips to Good Nutrition During Cancer Treatment

    By David Haas

Cancer treatments often cause side effects that make getting enough vitamins and minerals a challenge. Finding new ways to maintain a healthy diet are important both during and after treatment. Learning which foods are best for your personal needs and new ways to manage the symptoms of cancer and cancer treatment can assist you in getting the nutrients your body needs.

Nausea is one of the most common side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. People experiencing nausea can help reduce symptoms by eating lighter, cold snacks and meals and eating crackers after napping or first thing in the morning. In fact, you may want to begin keeping a pack of crackers on your bedside table so that you can have a few before you get up. Cold foods, such as yogurt and fresh fruit, are ideal if you experience nausea as a result of cooking smells. You can learn more about controlling nausea at the American Cancer Society.

One symptom of cancer treatment that may not be so obvious as nausea is chemo brain. Confusion, forgetfulness and trouble concentrating are all symptoms that can occur when you are getting chemotherapy treatment for cancer. According to Mesothelioma.com, eating a diet that focuses on brain boosting foods can help you maintain your focus while receiving cancer treatment. Good foods to include in your diet to fight chemo brain are berries, curry, coffee, salmon and concord grape juice. Make sure to get plenty of vegetables because research has shown that people receiving cancer treatment who also eat lots of vegetables have been able to retain their brainpower more successfully.

Fatigue may also begin to become apparent during cancer treatment. Fatigue may be the direct result of chemotherapy or a combination of therapy and the disease affecting your physical and mental health. Drinking enough fluids can help you fight fatigue. Opt for caffeine free herbal teas, water, juice or clear broth to ensure you are hydrated enough. You should also make sure that you are tested for anemia, a condition caused by chemotherapy that is linked to fatigue. Try adding a daily multi-vitamin to your routine to ensure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals. Your doctor may also provide treatment for anemia if it is severe. You can learn more about dealing with fatigue at the CARES Initiative.

Getting enough vitamins and minerals through your diet can be tough when you are undergoing treatment for cancer. Getting the right nutrients is one of the simplest things that you can do to improve your overall health, however. Using the right methods to find foods that are both appealing and nutritional can help you overcome the side effects of cancer treatment and enjoy the food that you are eating once again.
